Early Animation and Motion

Very early evidence of some attempts to depict motion can be seen via cave paintings. These were animals painted with several sets of legs in different positions, which attempt to represent the perception of movement.

Another example is of an early earthen bowl which was found in Iran. A series of 5 images were painted on the sides of the bowl, and showed a goat leaping up to nip at a tree. These would be seen as 'movement' if the bowl was to be turned quickly.

The image below shows an Egyptian Mural, which was found in the burial tomb of Khnumhotep and Niankhkhnum. It is believed to be over 4000 years old, and shows young soldiers being trained.
